Many Haitians don't have access to clean water. In the area where Project 117 operates, the average family walks 2–4 miles over the course of the day in order to haul water for bathing, drinking, and cleaning. How would your day look different if you had to carve out time to walk to the nearest grocery store for your water? Could you do it for a week?

Rice and beans are widely—and cheaply—available in Haiti, which means they're a staple of the Haitian diet. In the United States, we have hundreds of cuisine options readily available. Remind yourself of this simple luxury by getting a taste of Haitian life and living on nothing but rice, beans, and a sauce of your choosing for 5–7 days.

The average family in our school lives on less than $2 per day. Imagine having to pay for food, housing, schooling, and other basic needs on that small of a budget. Imagine the choices you'd be forced to make on a daily basis. Could you feed yourself and your family on the same amount for 5 days?

Electricity is a luxury in Haiti that the vast majority of our students do not enjoy at home. The average American consumes 10,812 kWh per year of electricity while the average Haitian consumes just 43 kWh per year. What would it look like for us to experience a weekend in their shoes without electricity—without heat, computers, tv, or appliances?
